High Arches vs. Flat Feet: Understanding Your Foot Structure and How It Affects You

If you have high arches or flat feet, you may experience pain and foot instability. Thankfully, there are simple solutions that can help you find relief. At Laguna Woods Podiatry Group in Laguna Hills, CA, Dr. Neda Arjomandi and Dr. Jody Greenberg are here to help you find the solutions you need to relieve pain and live your best life.

What are Flat Feet?

Most people have a natural, slight arch along the inside sole of the foot. In people with flat feet, this arch is less elevated than normal, or non-existent. This can create pain or discomfort, as the arch (or lack thereof) does not provide enough support for the foot. Pain in the heel or inner area of the sole of the foot is common, and many people with flat feet find that their pain increases with exercise.  Eventually, the ankle may roll inward as the ends of the feet turn outward.

What are High Arches?

High arches are less common than flat feet and are sometimes related to neurological disorders. Over time, high arches can lead to metatarsalgia, a painful condition that causes the ball of the foot to become inflamed. They may also cause instability that makes the foot more vulnerable to ankle sprains and can contribute to the formation of hammer toes and claw toes.

Treatment for Flat Feet and High Arches

If you think that you may have flat feet or high arches, working with a podiatrist is a good way to get the foot pain solutions that you need. After examining your feet and talking with you about any symptoms you're experiencing, your podiatrist will be able to prescribe customized orthotics to make up for the missing support. Bracing may also be necessary. In people whose feet are flattening due to a problem with their posterior tibial tendon, rehabilitative exercise therapy may be recommended.
